It has been one year since Private Danny Chen’s death. May his death not be in vain.

RIP, Danny Chen - we won’t forget you. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Danny Chen, he was a Chinese-American soldier serving in Afghanistan who suffered verbal and physical racially-motivated abuse from his fellow soldiers and superiors. He was found dead in October, unclear whether it was a suicide or friendly fire.
In December 2011, eight American soldiers were charged with crimes in connection with Chen’s death, but the military suddenly dropped the most serious charges in March. So far, only one of the eight soldiers has served any prison time (the maximum sentence was 18 years, he served 30 days). Wiki page here.

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

Why Vincent Chin Matters

Or, that important slice of American history that is never taught because a) it questions American exceptionalism, and b) it is about people of color and the violence inflicted upon them by white people.

I said anything I wanted because I don’t believe in children. I don’t believe in childhood. I don’t believe that there’s a demarcation. ‘Oh you mustn’t tell them that. You mustn’t tell them that.’ You tell them anything you want. Just tell them if it’s true. If it’s true you tell them.
