When will Asians finally be accepted as People of Color?
Today is Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, and in his honor, the Black students’ union sent out an email summing up MLK’s life, politics and legacy, along with a reminder of what we students can do. The email was sent to the Black students’ union email listserv and the Latino students’ union listserv.
But not to the Asian students’ union listserv.
Why the resistance to including Asians as people
Thanks for history re-fresher; unfortunately, model minority myth isn’t quite as simple as “You’re clearly not white and encounter tons of ignorance from that circumstance, but you’re still more socially accepted than black and latino group due to “positive stereotypes” (bullshit IMO) and thus receive better access to resources i.e. health care, education.”
One of the biggest issues stemming from the model minority myth today is that not all Asians are of high socio-economic status. Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders are considered an under-represented minority (what a bullshit category) by the government because on average, Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders face the same socio-economic factors as Blacks and Latinos, e.g. poverty, lack of access to quality education, etc.
But when it comes time to check the race box? You’re Asian, so schools and employers lump you with Asians of high socio-economic status…and you’re screwed over on so many levels, from recruitment to admissions to on-the-job support. And how many people are aware of the fact that of undocumented workers, the demographic that is growing the quickest is Asians?
